Gloria walked in as a survivor of exploitative domestic work who still lived on menial domestic jobs in the community to survive and cater for own household. She is a young mother of 4 children, who are at high risk of dropping out of school and possibly engaging in exploitative domestic work and other forms of child labor. On a mission to break such perpetual cycles by addressing the root causes, Gloria greatly aligned as a program beneficiary of WE REACH’s Economic empowerment interventions to protect children and survivors from exploitative work conditions and re-exploitation, under the Freedom Fund-supported Not Invisible Anymore (NIA) Program. Committed to building resilience through rights-based education and climate smart livelihoods at WE REACH, Gloria was engaged in a range of agribusiness, life-skills, entrepreneurship and advocacy trainings. She has built great interest and confidence at championing empowerment for herself and other young women who have survived exploitation in her own community. She currently runs a climate smart home garden demonstration site, empowering fellow young women’s livelihoods in climate smart farming techniques, an initiative that has significantly strengthened her household’s food security while she sells the surplus for extra income. Her dedication further earned her an exposure visit to the peanut butter production unit at Rising to Greatness (RIGO) CBO, WE REACH’s partner organization under the value addition segment of WE REACH’s agribusiness interventions. Demonstrating great passion during the learning process, Gloria impressively earned her first consignment agreement as a sales person for RIGO’s production unit, receiving bulk merchandise on credit to sell for profit and earn commissions. Applying the business skills she had been trained; on she executed her work diligently exceeding expectation and consequently rising up the ranks to a contracted gender champion at the unit! There she now earns a steady guaranteed monthly income. Gloria’s transformation is a powerful reflection of what women’s empowerment truly looks like. Today, she stands as a confident leader, a dependable provider, and a role model to a group of young domestic work survivors under the age of 18 within the NIA program. She uses her voice and lived experience to guide, mentor, and inspire these girls helping them see beyond their current struggles and recognize their worth and potential. Through her leadership, Gloria is creating a ripple effect by reaching 33 young girls in her community who are at risk of engaging in exploitative domestic work. She is not only rebuilding her own life but also supporting other young survivors to regain confidence, pursue safer and more dignified opportunities, and take steps toward independence. Her journey is clear proof that with determination, hard work, and resilience, a girl can break free from cycles of poverty and exploitative labor, rise above limitations, and build a meaningful and self-sustaining future. To girls under 18 experiencing exploitative domestic work, know that your situation does not define you and is not permanent. There are people, programs, and safe spaces ready to support you such as the Not Invisible Project at @WE REACH. Speak out, seek help, and take the first step toward a better future.
